Built in the mid-1980s, this spacious home had an underwhelming outdoor area—a basic deck and benches that failed to draw people into the backyard, the property’s best feature. The homeowners envisioned a transformation with three must-haves: a built-in BBQ that encouraged socializing, multiple flexible gathering zones, and a durable layout fit for teens and pets.
The final design delivered on all fronts. A cedar-roofed structure with ten skylights preserved kitchen light while seamlessly connecting indoors to out. The BBQ, clad in natural ledgestone, sits beside the main dining area for interactive grilling. Faux cedar pillars and a roof overhang with knee braces echo the home’s architecture, while refinishing the existing deck and adding perimeter steps helped integrate it with a new bluestone patio.
Two distinct entertaining zones: a heated dining area and a trellised lounge, are visually linked and anchored by water features and a firepit, creating a backyard that’s both inviting and indestructible.
