Frustrated by the flat, uninspired rear exterior of their home, the owners seized the opportunity to enhance both form and function by adding a new family room off the back, replacing a repurposed interior space. This thoughtful addition not only improved the architectural interest of the rear façade but also created a warm, spacious gathering area. Positioned at the end of a hallway that originally led only to a bonus room stairway, the design challenge was to preserve stair access without compromising the new entry. The solution—a latticed, open-backed built-in bookshelf—opened the stairwell to the room, while matching custom cabinetry and a Montana Fieldstone gas fireplace anchored the space with warmth and cohesion.
